On the Line: A Timeline link between Cambridge and Mali
WedieGranary-Large5060.JPG (51653 bytes) This is a granary at Wédié. Millet and other food is stored here.

The walls are goat dung mixed with mud and straw.

The granary is raised from the ground to protect the structure against heavy rains in July/August. This also gives good air circulation which helps keep the valuable contents dry.

Villagers at Wédié need to store millet to see them through the long dry season. Much millet is grown but this is not enough for the village's needs so extra is bought in using the income from market gardening.

Seed for the next year's crops also needs storing. The villagers say that they have problems storing seed. Sometimes it does not keep through to the next planting time, because of the heat.
